Story Highlights

  • In 2011, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, Tawakkol Karman honored for work on women's rights.
  • In 2010, Liu Xiaobo was recognized for his struggle on human rights in China.
  • In 2009, Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to improve international diplomacy.

8:08PM EDT October 14. 2012 - We asked readers on Twitter for thoughts on the EU being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Comments have been edited for clarity and grammar:

It's hard to recognize the European Union in the middle of the biggest economic crisis in decades. Not the right moment.

-- @LinharesMario

It is the Nobel Peace Prize! Not Nobel economics prize. EU brought peace to a violent part of the world.

-- @KnolR

Nobel prize going to EU is a complete joke. The "prize" has been awarded for purely political reasons for decades.

-- @firesign58

Didn't you hear? They give those away to anybody. Obama got one for good intentions. I'm expecting mine in the mail any day.

-- @vjf3025

It's pretty clear by now (after Al Gore, President Obama and now the EU have won) that the Nobel Peace Prize is no longer relevant.

-- @capecodsales

The European Union may have done the "best work for fraternity between nations."
