Iran TV correspondent killed covering blasts in Syrian capital

DAMASCUS, Syria - Iranian Press TV says one of its correspondents has been killed in Syria covering the twin blasts and gun battles in the capital, Damascus.

Press TV identified the correspondent as 33-year-old Maya Nasser, a Syrian national.

State-run media said two massive explosions targeted the army command headquarters in Damascus this morning, setting off clashes and a huge fire inside the building.

Lessons Learned From 1 Year As A Fulltime Author Entrepreneur ...

It?s just over a year since I gave up my job as an IT contractor and became a full-time author-entrepreneur. I initially gave myself six months to meet some specific financial targets and after making those, I didn?t return to the day job.

Joanna Penn making videos

Joanna Penn making videos at the British Museum, London ? just part of the job!

I am seriously happy in my new life, but there have been some real challenges and lessons I?ve learned along the way that I wanted to share, as well as some action points if you?re considering making a similar move.

As ever, I just try to share honestly with you guys so I hope this helps you on your journey. I?d love to hear from you so please leave a comment at the end of the post with your thoughts and ideas.

How do I currently make a living as an author-entrepreneur?

I?m not going to share figures but suffice to say, I earn around the average wage for a UK female. It?s a good start for Year 1 of business, but it is a lot less than I am used to earning, so I have some aggressive goals for Year 2. Here?s the rough percentage split of my income.

revenue splt 201250% Ebook sales and 95% of this is fiction, skewed towards the second half of the year when Prophecy came out and I had 2 books at $2.99. Ideally I want to be at 80% book sales for my income, so clearly writing more books is the main goal.

25% Speaking. I do full day and half day courses where I teach digital publishing and marketing as well as online entrepreneurial skills. I?ve also done multi-day events as the main speaker and I?ve spoken in Australia, Bali and London ? and next month, in Zurich, Switzerland. Yes, I?m available for hire!

25% Courses and Consulting. From this site, I sell multi-media courses on writing, publishing and book marketing, and I also offer 1:1 consulting sessions for more targeted help.

So you can see why I describe myself as an author-entrepreneur. I could not have given up the day job based on my fiction sales alone, but with an established platform (3 years blogging, podcasting & social networking) I was able to make the jump. I share a lot more about the challenges of being an entrepreneur in my non-fiction book, How to love your job or find a new one, which is focused on career change.

Lesson 1: It?s much easier to have a day job

I have to say up-front that it was easier to work for a company than it is to work full-time for myself. I was a contractor so I worked for a daily rate but I had a steady employer for years so there was little risk.

meditateThis may be the dirty little secret of being an author and an online entrepreneur!

Because the money was better, the social life was pretty fun and I was well regarded in my field. Back in Jan 2011, I wrote about the mixed blessings of the day job and how it meant I didn?t have to worry about cashflow and I still stand by those words.

However, I have wanted to change my career for over 10 years because of a nagging sense inside that what I did was pointless and didn?t benefit the world, let alone satisfying my creative soul. I am also aware that it takes the average company 3-5 years to make a profit, and I am in this for the long term.

I just wanted to be clear that this is not an easy option and I still have some wobbly days where I look at the contract market and think about what could be. Then I remember the stress headaches, the anger and the frustration and I smile and recommit to this path. On my wall is this quote from Steven Pressfield?s ?The War of Art?

?On the field of the self stands a knight and a dragon. You are the knight. Resistance is the dragon. The battle must be fought anew every day.?

Action Point 1: Understand the why behind what you are doing. Weigh up the pros and cons of leaving the day job and write them down. Do a lot of research about your chosen path and get educated.

Action Point 2: Save at least 6 months income, preferably a year. Do a financial plan for the first 3 years and aim to hit specific targets every month. Both of these were important for convincing my husband that this could be a good idea, and that over time, with more books, my income should grow.

If you want to know more about the money side of being a professional writer, check out Secrets of a Pro Writer with me and NY Times bestselling author CJ Lyons who seriously knows what she?s talking about in terms of making a very successful living at this.

Lesson 2: Defining your own life is a huge adjustment

I was amazed how the change affected me emotionally, and I have renewed appreciation for people who are retiring after a life of work, or women putting their careers on hold for children. When you give up a structured job, the routine you have lived your life around is suddenly broken and you have emotional adjustments as well as the practical aspects that go along with this.

My self-esteem plummeted.

I went from a high status, highly paid? job where I was near the top of my field after 13 years as a financials IT contractor to being the bottom of the ladder in an entirely new career. Yes, I had spent over 3 years building an audience online but that doesn?t mean much to family and friends. It also doesn?t pay the bills.

ipad setup at the London Library

How I write at the London Library

I also found it hard at first to sort out a working routine that produced enough material and focused on writing first, then marketing as well as creating new products. This took me ages to get sorted but I am pretty happy with how I?m working now. I rarely have a full day off though, but that?s normal for new businesses and this is my passion as well as my job!

?Action Point 1: Treat it like a job and set some daily routines. I diarize days when I work on fiction and others that I work on courses, consulting, blogging etc. I set deadlines for producing specific pieces of work. I have a routine around my email, twitter etc. I make sure that I have new income streams coming in at regular intervals, whether it?s a book, a new course or a speaking appearance. The little trickles of income will expand over time but only if there is more product :)

Action Point 2: Find somewhere to work that is not your home. I find that getting out of the house and doing a form of commute into the city really helps me as I can separate from the house, leave the chores and be productive. I also get the benefit of a commute, so I can feel part of the city vibe, I can buy myself a coffee or meet writer friends. I am a paid member of the London Library which is excellent and I try to spend 1-3 days a week there in order to write in a different environment.

Lesson 3: You need support through a physical network

I love my online friends and I could not have made this change without all of you who I have never met in person. But when you have a job that is basically all virtual, you can get quite lonely so you need physical support.

My husband is my primary #1 fan/support along with my Mum but I also have a network of writer and entrepreneur friends that I meet in London for coffee and brainstorming around our challenges. It?s a like a pro-author-entrepreneur-circle.

coffee cupI met most of these people originally online or at networking events and cultivated friendships in the real world as I moved back to London in June 2011 after 11 years in New Zealand and Australia.

I make sure I schedule coffee/lunch at least once a week in order to break up the time spent writing and being virtual. I also go to various networking meetings to expand my circle of friends. This is crucial to my sanity!

Action Point: Make an effort to go to networking events, writing groups and conventions where you can meet people physically and build a network of like-minded supportive people. Actively aim to meet people who are going places in their career.

Lesson 4: It?s absolutely worth it!

I love my new life, now I have settled into it and I can see how things will (hopefully) change in the coming years. I know from past experiences that the beginning time is often the hardest and that every year things will be different but my skills will grow and so will my number of books & products and so will my audience. When I started this site, I had nothing and a lot has changed in the last 4 years so making a start is critical.

hourglassMost of the authors making the big money have been doing this for many years, and most indies making $5000 ? $10,000 a month have at least 5 books. Success in any field takes some time to achieve, as does learning the craft and the business of writing. So don?t expect to make it with novel #1, but keep at it.

On the entrepreneurial side, the mega blogs making a lot of money from online products generally started on the internet back when blogging didn?t exist and when geeks were not cool. Nowadays they rule the (online) world :) but it has taken many of them a lot of years to make it. I particular like this video by Chris Brogan, who is an A list blogger, speaker and business author (it?s at the bottom of the post). Overnight success gets up at 5am after getting to bed at midnight. Overnight success doesn?t watch a lot of TV. Overnight success is gained inch by inch when no one is watching.

Action Point 1: Look at the writing careers of people you admire and see how hard it was for them at the start as well. Read Stephen King?s On Writing ? he was working nights in a laundry when he finally sold Carrie after trying for many years. It?s not easy to make this change so go easy on yourself at the beginning.

Action Point 2: Keep writing, keep producing, keep learning ? and do it for the rest of your life :)

My plans for Author-Entrepreneur Year 2

Often, life doesn?t quite turn out the way we plan it, but it?s certain that nothing happens unless you have some written goals! I also believe in stretch goals and not aiming too low.

So, in Year 2:

  • I want to move into the hybrid model of publishing ? with my agent helping me to get a traditional book deal for my thrillers. I will also continue to self-publish but possibly under a different brand and do some work for hire to pay the bills. This will bring in income monthly from Amazon sales but also in spikes from traditional book deals.
  • I want to double my income and move my % split to be 60% fiction, with 20% digital courses and 20% speaking & consulting. My aim is to be at 80% scalable income, which means you create once and sell multiple times. So books are scalable as are online products but speaking and consulting actually take time every time you do them so they are not scalable. But I enjoy them so I do want them as part of the business ? I don?t think I ever want to be 100% author only because I love the business/entrepreneurial side of things and I love helping people.

OK, that?s a bit of a mammoth post but this is my life nowadays and I do think sharing the journey with you honestly is important. I always want to save you time, heartache and money so lessons learned are critical!

What do you think? Any questions or lessons you have learned?

Please do leave your comments below as I?m really keen to hear what you think about this.

My Top Ten Takeaways From Colon Cancer Surgery - The Phoenix ...

Green is good!

In last month?s post, I described my feelings and experience when you hear the news that the diagnosis is cancer. ?Since then, I have had a colon resection, or in regular speak, they cut out about 5 inches of my colon to remove the affected area, and then re-attached the two ends. ?Colon is good as new.

Below is my top ten list of takeaways as a surgery noob. ?Yep, 51 years old and I had never been admitted to a hospital before. ?For some of you, my list may seem obvious. ?For any surgery virgins out there, keep this handy for your inevitable first time.

10. The surgical staff at Banner Desert Hospital is awesome!
I have no other staff to compare my surgery and recovery crew to, but I can?t imagine there is a better team out there. From check-in to pre-op to recovery, they were amazing.

9. Let the student nurse insert your IV
While getting prepped for surgery, the nurse introduced me to Melanie, a nursing student from ASU (Go Devils!) ?The nurse asked me if I minded if Melanie inserted my IV. ?I hate needles as much as anyone, but I figured why not get a little good Karma working my way and let her practice on me? ?Other than a little blood that spurted on her and the floor, she did a great job.

8. Phlebotomists are modern day vampires
No one told me how much blood is drawn during a hospital stay and recovery. ?I made it to my hospital room at 8pm on Friday and by midnight Monday, no less than 12 blood draws were taken. ?Worst of all, it seems that most draws occurred between 10pm and 4am. ?Why that time? ?Easy. ?The phlebotomists are vampires. ?A vial for the lab, a vial for them. ?Combine that with the insane number of draws and it makes perfect sense.

7. Hyperextending your elbow during a blood draw makes it way easier
While I?m on the topic, one kind, gentle, middle aged, non-vampire phlebotomist gave me a great tip about keeping my arm as straight as possible during the draw. ?It was amazing how much it helped. ?I will forever remember her tip and attempt to hyper-extend my elbow every time a vampire phlebotomist comes near me.

6. Walks around the nurses station can get competitive
Regardless of how much you hurt, if another patient is taking a walk at the same time, you become possessed to complete your lap faster than them. ?It just happens.

5. Time can stand still the first few days after surgery
This one is unreal. ?A large clock is across the room from your bed. ?It is not your friend. ?I would wake up, look at the clock and the time was 1:15. ?I would fall back asleep, into what felt like a deep sleep and then wake up, look at the clock, and the time was 1:20. ?This happened more times than I can remember.

4. Hospitals are for sick people. ?Get out and recuperate ASAP
Enough said.

3. Much like building a business relationship, create bonds with the nursing staff. ?It helps.
Why wouldn?t you want a good working relationship with the people that can make you more comfortable? ?Banner Desert nurses were incredible.

2. Pain pumps rock!
As soon as I was able to understand how the pain pump worked, it became my little friend. ?When the light turned green, all I had to do was push it for a little morphine in the drip. ?If offered, always accept the pain pump.

1. There is nothing better than seeing your spouse come through the door.
I told my wife prior to surgery that I did not want her holding a vigil in my hospital room. ?If I was sleeping, take advantage of the time to get home and get some rest or take care of things she needed to do. ?I told her I had around the clock care so I would be fine. ?However, to be honest, on the rare occasion she was not there when I woke up, I really wished she was.

Update
My surgery was Friday, September 14th. ?Monday night, September 17th, ?Dr Buckmire dropped by with the pathology report. ?He was able to grab 15 lymph nodes near the cancer site. ?9 tested positive for cancer. ?It only takes 1. ?Much like I knew surgery was going to happen when I heard the words ?It is cancer? after the colonoscopy, I knew immediately that chemotherapy was the next step. ?No ifs, ands or buts.

That process starts this week with oncologist appointments. ?I will be interviewing at least two, maybe more. ?From my doctors, and cancer survivors I?ve talked to, I?m looking at treatment that lasts something in the 6 month range.

Bring it on.

Wikipedia's Writing ? Tests Show It's Too Sophisticated for Its ...

English: A vector graphic based on (the widely-used) Dr. Fry?s readability formula: The y-axis is the average number of sentences per hundred words. The x-axis is the average number of syllables per hundred words. The intersection of the x and y axis determines the reading level of the content. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I?ve been excoriated a few times in comment threads when I?ve asserted that scientific information made accessible through open access (OA) publishing doesn?t necessarily give users access to the information ? that actually, unless you?re well-educated and possess specialist knowledge, much of the information in the scientific literature will be inaccessible simply because you can?t understand it, much less put it to use.

With some experience teaching literacy to adults and English to non-English speakers, I know you can?t take language mastery for granted. Speaking isn?t the same as reading, fluency in daily activities doesn?t equate to comprehension of abstract or specialized information, and comprehension goes beyond words and sentences to realms and signals that are often ?meta? to the words and sentences used.

Most scientific papers use a vocabulary pitched to a highly educated audience. It?s then sprinkled with jargon for a specialist audience familiar with statistics and trial design (quick, name the differences between a cohort, cross-over, or cluster trial design). Making sense of even the methods requires appreciable amounts of knowledge.

But let?s begin with readability.

A common measure of basic readability is the Flesch score. Standard reading level is at a Flesch score of about 60 or higher, with lower scores equating to more difficult reading. The scientific literature is pegged in various studies to have a reading score of around 30, with one 2002 BMJ study finding that British English is actually more readable than US English. A low readability score ? lower equals more demanding ? makes the information difficult or impossible to comprehend for the majority of non-scientific readers.

But how difficult a challenge is readability for Wikipedia readers? A study in 2010 of cancer information on Wikipedia found that while the information was as accurate as that in a professionally curated database, its advanced reading demands made it much less accessible (the professional database required about a 9th grade reading level, while Wikipedia?s cancer information required about a college sophomore?s reading skills).

Leveraging this and other information, a group of researchers in the Netherlands analyzed the readability of Wikipedia overall. Their paper, published in First Monday, is quite readable.

Wikimedia, the parent of Wikipedia, has known for some time that its core product is too difficult to read ? to address this, it introduced a ?Simple English? version of Wikipedia in 2003, which contains about 68,000 articles (compared to the 3.5 million in the main wiki). The Basic English suggested for the Simple English Wikipedia consists of about 850 words. In late 2003, the Simple English version had a readability score of 80 (Easy). By 2006, this score had dropped to 70 (Fairly Easy).

One interesting finding in this study is how many Wikipedia articles consist of five or fewer sentences. In filtering a few million articles, they found that 40% of Wikipedia articles consist of five sentences or less.

Eliminating these short articles, the authors found that the readability score of the majority of Wikipedia (73.5%) is 51.18 (SD = 13.84), which is lower than the goal of 60 (Standard). In addition, 45% of the articles could be qualified as Difficult or worse.

In the Simple English Wikipedia, 60% of the articles consist of five sentences or fewer. Eliminating these from the calculations, the reading score for the Simple English Wikipedia came in at 61.69, lower than the goal of 80. In fact, 94.7% of the articles scored lower than 80, and 42.3% were below the score needed to be considered Standard reading material.

The authors took a further step ? comparing articles with the same title between the two versions. Comparing these, they found that the Simple English Wikipedia had an average score of 61.46 compared to a reading score of 49.27 for the general Wikipedia ? both well off their reading level goals.

As the authors write in their conclusions:

The results of this study show that the readability of the English Wikipedia is overall well below a desired standard. . . . Moreover, half the articles can be classified as difficult or worse. This finding confirms our hypothesis that numerous articles on Wikipedia are too difficult to read for many people.

The authors also created a tool you can use to test the readability of any entry in Wikipedia.

There are two simple explanations for the declining readability scores in both the standard and Simple English versions of Wikipedia. First, it?s a skeuomorph of an encyclopedia, and encyclopedias are supposed to have formal, passive language and sophisticated vocabulary. That?s what we think it should be. The second explanation ? robust borrowing from authoritative resources ? also likely contributes to the works? difficulties in reaching the optimal readability scores.

In fact, experts are notoriously bad at writing for non-expert audiences. Readability problems in medicine plague patient-education materials, for example. A 1989 study of the readability of smoking cessation materials found that ?a serious disparity existed between the reading estimates of smoking education literature and the literacy skills of patients.? In short, many patients couldn?t read about how to quit. A 2001 study of patient-education materials aimed at parents and discussing pediatric topics found that the reading level was about four grades higher than the intended goal. A 2004 study of patient-education materials written for family medicine patients found a similar disparity. A 2008 study of orthopaedic patient education materials found that only 10% achieved the desired readability level. It seems that if you want to find an area where every medical specialty group is failing, you need look no further than the readability of their patient-education materials.

I once worked on a publication aimed at patients that went through academic editors as part of its approval process. It quickly became clear that the writers ? who initially were writing at an appropriate level ? were helpless to avoid writing for these academic editors after a time, because the feedback from these ?experts? was firmly and unquestionably that too many nuances and qualifications were being left out by using short sentences and a limited vocabulary. Needless to say, the publication folded, having attained a reading level only a graduate student would understand.

Even when they try, it?s difficult for advanced readers and writers to write to a lower reading level. It feels condescending, like you?re ?dumbing it down,? and also prevents you from using sentence structures and vocabulary that come to you naturally. It?s hard work, and it?s unnatural. But it?s also extremely important to do it right.

Wikipedia is free, yet it presents readability barriers to many of its users. This suggests that the challenge of making scientific information approachable ? and therefore, accessible ? is much deeper, much more difficult, and much more complex than simply removing reader funding.

Coaches fight over 'hot guy' on 'The Voice'

Tyler Golden/NBC

Dez Duron had the judges fighting over him on "The Voice."

By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

An easy way to start a friendly fight between "The Voice" coaches? Put a hot guy on stage! That's exactly what happened on Monday night's episode of the NBC hit reality show, when Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera duked it out for a very cute contestant, one that actually auditioned last season. So who ended up snagging the guy?

Plus, another contestant inspired Cee Lo Green to take the stage, one of Adam Levine's gets makes him so happy that he brushes some dirt off his shoulder and former Disney starlet Jordan Pruitt sings for her second chance at stardom during week three of the blind auditions...

Adam and Christina called a truce during the last episode

Michelle Brooks-Thompson is a 28-year-old juggling her singing career, working full-time at a bank and being a wife and mother. Her husband was an aspiring NFL star who made it on the St. Louis Rams' roster only to be dropped before the season even started. Bummer! Michelle performs "Proud Mary," a reality singing competition staple, which gets Adam, Cee Lo and Christina to turn around. "I would be very blessed and very honored to work with you," Adam gushes and Cee Lo says, "That's a song that's been sung a million times. You made it new, you made it fresh." Blake calls himself an "idiot" for not pushing his button. In the end, Michelle chooses Adam, who proceeds to brush that imaginary dirt off his shoulders.

Twenty-five-year-old Diego Val is originally from Peru and suffered through a horrible disease that disintegrates your hip bones until you can't walk anymore when he was 8. When his grandmother gave him a guitar, he discovered his love of music and now performs at children's hospitals. "Music is something that can make anybody smile," he says. His half English-half Spanish version of "Animal" sounded pretty great to us, but only Cee Lo turns his chair. "What's wrong with y'all?!" he asks his fellow coaches. "I was OK with that," Adam explains of Diego being on Team Cee Lo, while Christina hints that she might "snatch" the singer from her fellow coach later on in the season.

Thirty-two-year-old music teacher Suzanna Choffel wants to be on the show as tribute to her students. "It's time for me to shine," she says. "Landslide" is Suzanna's song of choice and we have to admit, this is one of our favorite auditions of season three (so far). Adam and Blake agree with us, pushing their buttons. "You bastard!" Blake says when Adam stresses that he turned first. "That's how friends talk to one another." Gotta love their bromance! While Suzanna calls the decision "a toss-up," she chooses Blake as her coach. "I'm so mad," Adam says. "She's so good, it's crazy."

New superstars are joining The Voice: Usher and Shakira!

Blake also adds demo singer Ryan Jirovec and 16-year-old Internet radio host Michaela Paige to his team. "I'm feeling really good about the situation," the country star says of his three pickups.

Season two auditioner Dez Duron, a cutie who used to be on the Yale football team, decided to try out for the show again. "I don't regret the decision of leaving school to come out," he says of pursuing a singing career. "I'm definitely back here with something to prove." He sings "Sara Smile" and serenades Blake, Christina and Cee Lo into pushing their buttons. (Yes, all of them remember him from last season.) Christina pushes hard for Dez to pick her and Blake says, "This dude is good looking! I'm secure enough to say that to you. Man to man, you're hot." Christina pleads, "Don't break my heart!" Thankfully for her, Dez chooses to join her team. "(Expletive)," is Blake's only response to the news.

VJ, 25, is a music teacher who is basically Cee Lo's biggest fan and decides to take a risk by singing the coach's hit song "Forget You." VJ puts a jazz spin on the song, but fails to inspire any of the judges to turn their chairs. "I can't think of an odder song for your voice," Blake says, while Christina says VJ didn't "spank" the lyrics the same way Cee Lo does. Cee Lo's opinion? "You have great, great taste in music!" He then joins VJ on stage to sing the song with him, coaching him to sing it with "sarcasm." It was a sweet moment between artist and fan, one that highlights why The Voice is so special. "I just sang with Cee Lo Green!" VJ gushes. "He probably forgot he didn't even get picked," Cee Lo hilariously says.

Alexis Marceaux is a singer-songwriter from New Orleans, who was evacuated from the city a day before Hurricane Katrina "It's been seven years, it was the most traumatic thing I have ever experienced," she recalls. "Everything was torn apart. It was chaos." Alexis' family lost their house and everything they owned, but she says, "I'm lucky to have [my family]." Alexis dedicates her performance of "Go Your Own Way" to her community. Cee Lo turns his chair, snagging Alexis for his team.

Adam added rocker Sam James to his team, Christina snagged Laura Vivas, a Latin pop singer and Blake picked up a fourth team member in this episode, Lelia Broussard.

Next up is Brandon Mahone, 17, who describes himself "a classical young guy." He proves this by singing a seriously smooth version of The Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain." Adam immediately pushes his button, followed by Cee Lo and Christina. "You are a real soul singer," Adam gushes right before landing the soulful youngster on his team.

Did you catch the Justin Bieber look-alike auditioning for the show?

Jeffrey James is a valet at some restaurants in Nashville who is known to shamelessly leave his CDs in people's cars, just in case they are a record producer. Jeffrey sings Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation" and we're shocked that no one turned around. Blake and Adam explain that Jeffrey hit his stride too late, but say he's great. Still, Jeffrey is pissed and we can't say we blame him.

Former teen pop star Jordan Pruitt, 21, once had a recording contract with Disney and has toured with Vanessa Hudgens, The Cheetah Girls and was once romantically linked to Nick Jonas. Jordan left Disney last year because she wanted to make "more mature" music and believes one of the coaches can help build her as an artist. Her rendition of "The One That Got Away" gets Jordan's hero Christina to turn, with the coach saying, "I have been waiting for you!"

Last up is Terisa Griffin, 42, who has a whole lot of personality and experience. "I think you should never, ever stop dreaming," she explains of trying out for "The Voice." Terisa tackles Adele's hit song "Someone Like You" and while hesitant at first, Christina eventually pushes her button, as does Blake. After asking several questions, including "What will you, as a coach, do for me?" (eye roll alert!), she chooses Blake. Christina is cool with it.

(AP) ? The hills of Custer State Park are set to rumble as the hooves of about 1,300 buffalo thunder across the prairieland during the 47th annual Buffalo Roundup.

Thousands of spectators began to stream into the park shortly after 6 a.m. Monday to get a firsthand look at the animals as they stampede down the prairie. A pancake breakfast, hot chocolate and coffee are on offer to keep the visitors warm.

Cowboys and cowgirls are herding the buffalo into corrals at the park, where entrance is free for the day.

About 300 buffalo will be up for auction Nov. 17. The buffalo are bought to supplement or start herds, or to be eaten.

Ohio Volunteers Help Clean Snow For Seniors - Retirement Homes

Last Saturday, the 22nd of September, was officially the first day of autumn in North America. And when Autumn arrives, snowfall is never far behind. In fact, snow has already fallen in many parts of the United States and Canada.

And while snowfall is beautiful to many people, it can be a major impediment to mobility for seniors.

To help seniors cope with the upcoming snowfall, a group of volunteers in the Cleveland area is coming together to help make it a little easier for the state?s older citizens.

As reported recently in the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper, an organization called the Community Partnership on Aging (CPA) is currently seeking volunteers who can help pave walkways, taking garbage cans to the street for pick-up, as well as leaf pickup and other light assistance to local seniors.

The volunteers who spoke to the newspaper say not only do they help local seniors; they also feel good about the work they do.

?Everyone we helped was very appreciative. I know when I?m older, I would like someone to help me,? said Adam Gent, a local volunteer, told the news outlet.

Seniors in most Ohio assisted living communities, however, will likely not have to worry about snowfall and shoveling, as their community will likely take care of all winter-related cleanup.

Get Your Note in First! :: Fresh Updates from RAC

I once spoke at a synagogue in the United States, when I was confronted by a woman. She had come with her 16-year-old grandson to hear me talk about IRAC?s work fighting for pluralism. She had brought him along because she wanted him to connect to Israel. She told me that he loved my message. But as a result, he wanted nothing to do with Israel. ??I shudder to think how many times I became so immersed in my desire to make everyone I meet push back against the Orthodox monopoly in Israel that I also pushed them away from Israel. Has the same feeling occurred to any of you reading this weekly newsletter? If the answer is yes, then I ask for your forgiveness.

IRAC is passionate about fighting for social justice in Israel. The reason we are so zealous about our work is that we believe that one day Israel will be a pluralistic society; one day we will remember the time when women were forced to sit in the back of the bus, kept from speaking on the radio, and forced off billboards, and look back at it as a crazy blip on Israel?s road to becoming a mature democracy. ??To realize this vision we need Jews (and non-Jews) living outside of Israel to be aware of the challenges that we face, but also to feel hopeful that these challenges can be overcome.?? Every year, after the High Holidays, the Western Wall is made ready for the new year?s prayers. Immediately after Yom Kippur, the Kotel is cleaned of all the previous year?s notes. This is done with great care and respect and the small pieces of paper are taken to a geniza to be given a symbolic burial. ??We want all of you to be among the first to send their wishes to the Kotel this coming year.

Click here to write your own message. We will take it over to the Western Wall immediately after the Holidays. ??We pray with our hearts but we also need to pray with our hands.? The coming year will provide ample opportunities for both. ??May we all find meaning at this Yom Kippur day.

It's Prostate Cancer Awarneness Month?Have You Been Tested ...

A recent warning against using one of the most common tests for prostate cancer has left many men questioning the effectiveness and safety of the popular test.

Last May, The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended against using
the prostate specific antigen (PSA) saying it offers ?a very small potential benefit and significant potential harms.? The recommendation has sparked debate among health professionals.

According to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), in 2008, nearly 215,000 men were diagnosed with the disease annually and more than 28,000 died from it. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men.

With September being national Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Raza Khan, MD, a urologist at Advocate Condell Medical Center, says it?s a good reminder for men to educate themselves on the issue so they can make the most informed decision possible regarding testing.

Dr. Khan says that patients need to consider a number of factors before having the screening.

?Men need to assess their individual risks including family history of cancer, whether or not they smoke, along with their age, race, and weight,? he said. ?This will help your doctor assess the risks and benefits of performing tests.?

While knowledge of your health history can be critical to understanding your risks, Dr. Khan says it?s also important for men to take control over their health habits.

?The best way to prevent prostate cancer is by minimizing exposure to excesses of toxic substances like alcohol and tobacco while also eating more whole foods,? Dr. Khan said. ?Adding regular physical activity and learning stress reduction techniques are essential too.?

The Good Teacher

Not all teachers are equal, and not all students desire to learn. From ancient times the relationship between teacher and student was considered to be an important one. If the time spent at school is taken into account, a student may spend more than half of his or her waking hours at the school. Up to a third of that time is in a direct interactive way with the student?s teacher or teachers. In all of history one name comes to mind when contemplating the greatest of teachers.

Aristotle lived from 384 BC to 322 BC and he was a Greek philosopher as well as a polymath. He was a student of Plato and the teacher of Alexander the Great. His writings covered many subjects, including physics, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, logic, rhetoric, linguistics, politics, government, ethics, biology, and zoology. Plato was the teacher of Socrates, and without Plato, Aristotle would not have become one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy today. If Plato was a bad teacher or if Aristotle had been a bad student, then history would be very different from what it is today. Think of what this would have meant to Alexander the Great as a student of a bad student of a poor teacher! Would Alexander have been so great?

Aristotle?s views on the physical sciences profoundly shaped medieval scholarship, and their influence extended well into the Renaissance period, although they were ultimately replaced by Newtonian physics. In the zoological sciences, some of his observations were confirmed to be accurate just at the beginning of the 19th century. So it stands to reason that had Aristotle become a bad student, not only would Alexander not have been quite so great, perhaps there never would have been a ?Sir Isaac Newton?! Aristotle?s works contain the earliest known records of the formal study of logic, which was incorporated in the late 19th century into ?modern formal logic?. If Aristotle and Plato had lived in a system of education such as the current educational model in use today, many of the benefits of education might not have come into existence, and things would be much worse. In this way the educational models must be constructed to consider the future potential of the great minds to come.

Not every teacher knows how to teach every student. It is the student?s job to show up on time for class and attempt to learn through the graduated conditioning that they have been instructed to learn under from Kindergarten to grade 12. If a student hasn?t learned how to properly learn by the time they reach college, the system has most likely failed them in some way. Teachers as well as students are currently swimming upstream against a system of education that is corroding at the edges. The river bank of scholastic achievement is crumbling and the waters of higher learning are muddily producing less than exceptional product. In the fray of the battle to save the ?good students?, faculties and departments are blaming the systematic problems upon the bad students and even teachers who are not holding their end up. At the end of the day however, no matter how many others are blamed it will be said that there is just another student ?who couldn?t be reached? by all those educated fellows and ladies, who get paid to teach things to people.

In today?s world every aspect of life is measured, assessed, and given a rating of some kind. Is it any wonder that the profession of teaching and in a more general sense, education, be treated the same way and evaluated? Students are looked upon by society as ?someone?s children? teachers are sometimes demonized as if the weight of the educational issues rests solely upon their shoulders. It does not. There have been many students throughout history who is some sense have had bad experiences ?in school?. It becomes too easy to blame teachers alone for this problem, governing bodies within these institutions should ask the rudimentary question, ?who hired them?, it?s not quite so easy an issue to blame Plato for any of Aristotle?s learning disabilities. It is also not a solution to blame the student for not being interested in their lessons either.

There are indeed bad students! It wouldn?t take any long tedious study to prove that. Not taking into consideration those students with learning disabilities, who need to be taught by teachers trained specially to deal with such disabilities, then it can only be said that there are students who truly do not wish to be in the education system at all. If asked and heard by faculty staff and parents alike, it is certain that a large portion of these ?bad students? would be realized to be disinterested in the courses and perhaps even with school altogether. Forcing and manipulating a child to learn against their will, when they really want to be rock stars and actors, makes them ?bad students?, and no amount of ?good teachers? or proper method is going to sway the mind of a resistant ?student?.

Then it must considered that the system is the main culprit to producing so many ?bad students? and teachers, and in essence it has not screened hard enough to find those students who truly want to be there, and learn. How can a college or University produce so many unproductive members within its walls when they hire only the best staff with the finest credentials? It is simple, the reason the system is failing its students is primarily due to greed. The majority of students in college and University do want to be there, but there is a percentage of the student body that is of a privileged class who have the money and the means to be there, not, however the desire. Instead of taking on a full time job in the parents firm, they choose to spend their days on campus. The Universities and colleges are riddled with students who desire something, but are not quite sure just exactly what that something is. They lack direction and focus. As a rule most educational facilities do not turn down students with money in their pockets or daddy?s and mommies who are willing to bankroll their child, until their child ?finds a direction in school?, indefinitely if necessary. It is true that the students have to have minimal grades to get into the programs and this leads to the next problem in the system, faculty funneling practices.

If a student doesn?t have good enough marks to get accepted into the top faculties such as, engineering science medicine or law, then they gradually spiral towards the lower faculties. The universities and colleges rate faculties by dollars input into the system by ?sponsors? If the top faculties of a learning institution didn?t get the sponsor money from the outside sources that they did, they would lose their rating with the university or college, and another faculty would be bumped up in terms of underlying monetary importance to the institution.

Since the top four faculties of Science, Medicine, Engineering and Law are seemingly cemented by the requirements of the world to have good doctors and lawyers, and the fact that civilization needs its buildings and space programs to stay intact and vital, then it must accepted that money ?drives everything?, especially education!

As the ?bad student? drift through their extended education, the fall from faculty to faculty, descending ever lower, until they end up at the bottom of the educational system, and find themselves becoming teachers with an minor arts degree. This was not the way I am certain, that Aristotle or Plato would have imagined the future of education to end up. Education used to be the highest of the faculties, and commanded the respect of all the others. It is unfortunate to realize that the teachers, the ones who are responsible for all those young bright minds, are operating from a system that permits anyone of the numerous dropouts from the other departments to join their ranks in education. It is no wonder that there are so many ?bad students? today.

Top NBA Players: #38 Zach Randolph

May 7, 2012; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Memphis Grizzlies power forward Zach Randolph (50) scores a basket against the Los Angeles Clippers during the first half of game four of the Western Conference quarterfinals of the 2012 NBA Playoffs at Staples Center. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Zach Randolph
Resume: 11.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 26.3 minutes, 46% FG, and 66% FT? Team record in games played: 17-11 (24-14 without)? Playoffs: 13.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, 42% FG, 63% FT, 3-4 record

Since I?ve already ranked a few players who had injury problems last season (Curry, Gordon, Rubio) you have to give me a little bit of leeway with Zach Randolph. I know that statistically Randolph was underwhelming, and it?ll have people like my friend Corey Edwards in a rage because Randolph made the top 50 and Amar?e Stoudemire didn?t. Well, I never said you?d agree with everything I said. Just remember that we?re talking about a guy who 16 months ago was in the midst of a postseason run that launched him into ?national phenomenon? status for about a month?s time. Seriously, who didn?t eat that Z-Bo hype up just as fast as Z-Bo would eat up free McDonalds? Randolph was so good in the opening round that after the Grizzlies upset the Spurs (only the 4th time ever that an 8 seed had defeated a 1 seed), there was legitimate talk that Memphis could make it all the way to the NBA Finals.

Well, the Grizzlies didn?t make it to the NBA Finals, but Z-Bo and the Grizzlies did enough to gain some serious and definitely warranted buzz as the potential Western Conference champion coming into the 2011-12 season. I bought into that buzz, and I stayed with it even after Randolph went down 4 games into the season with a torn MCL. Two months of Zach Randolph?s first regular season post Z-Bo break being robbed is a bigger crime than? well, any of the crimes Randolph actually ever committed.

Let me go off on a tangent for a minute: Remember two days ago when I had ranked DeMarcus Cousins 40th on the list, even though he has the skill level to potentially be in the top 20? I couldn?t do that because he has too much baggage, or as I explained it, he is like a great movie that you go see in theatres but you have a bunch of idiots sitting around you screaming the whole time. It?s still a great movie, you just don?t enjoy it as much. Once upon a time, Zach Randolph was the same guy DeMarcus Cousins is now. You wouldn?t be totally shocked to hear that DeMarcus Cousins was arrested DUI, just like there wasn?t anybody that was too surprised when Randolph was arrested for it? twice. I certainly wouldn?t be shocked if Cousins got into a fist fight with one of his teammates. Zach Randolph has been there and done that. Just ask Ruben Patterson?s face about the altercation. Up until Zach Randolph broke out in the 2011 playoffs he was just another guy putting up 20 points and 10 rebounds a night that was being overshadowed by things that force people to look past how talented you are. Maybe all Cousins needs is a change of scenery and time to grow up. It took Randolph ten seasons and four teams to get to where he is at now. I guess we can only hope.

Alright, tangent over, and all of the talk about DeMarcus Cousins is also over, because there will be no mention of any Sacramento Kings player from here on out. Not even Jimmer Fredette. Anyway, Randolph remains a top 40 player even though he dropped statistically and didn?t come close to duplicating the magic he created last postseason. The reason I couldn?t drop him further than Monroe or Cousins is because Randolph is at a point in his career where he may have finally figured it out. Cousins is just entering his crazy peak. Monroe isn?t nearly as assertive as he needs to be at this point. Randolph has found a healthy balance between the two. I still believe he can be the player he was in the summer of 2011. Let me go even further. I think he will be. I?m expecting a bounce back season from Zach Randolph and the Grizzlies as well. With so much love going to the Lakers, Thunder, Clippers, Spurs and Nuggets, the Grizzlies are once again the sleeping giant ready to be awoken from hibernation and shock some people in the playoffs. Even if Zach Randolph can?t jump over a cinder block or still doesn?t know how many minutes are in an NBA game, I expect some Z-Bo flashbacks in about 8 months.

How to Climb Trees With Ropes and Harnesses

Tree climbing, the sport, is an extension of tree climbing, the job, and both have been growing in popularity in recent years.

Tchukki Andersen, an arborist with a trade group called the Tree Care Industry Association, says that demand for pros who can climb and maintain trees began to increase after the Northeast blackout of 2003, which started when trees near Cleveland touched high-voltage power lines and ultimately affected 55 million people. In the aftermath government agencies required utilities to spend more to keep their lines clear. Since then a steady sequence of hurricanes, tornadoes, and ice storms have kept up the pressure on utilities and created ongoing work for arborists. "We just seem to be more inundated with more frequent and intense storms these days," Andersen says.

As the need for tree climbers has grown, the gear has improved. And a growing number of companies are teaching the necessary skills, including Tree Climbers International, in Atlanta, Georgia; a national group called North American Training Solutions; and the New England Tree Climbing Association. Gary Gross, one of the founders of the New England group, is a 59-year-old Vietnam veteran and former engineer for Pratt & Whitney. "There's so much work for arborists that they can't keep up," he says, "and it's really not that complicated to learn."

This summer I headed to Manchester, Conn., where I joined a recreational climber and two arborists for a weekend course with Gross. As a sport, tree climbing seemed easier and safer to learn than rock climbing. And the skills could even have a payoff down the road, according to Andersen. "We'll put recreational climbers to work," he says. "They have quite a bit of the training a tree care company is looking for. And the industry pays well."

Here's what we learned, and some of the gear we used, in Gary Gross's backyard. The following overview isn't enough to get a climber started, though?to learn the sport safely, hands-on instruction is vital.

Invisible plastic particles in seawater damaging to sea animals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Plastic nanoparticles in seawater can have an adverse effect on sea organisms. Particles measuring about a thirty millionth of a millimetre, and therefore invisible to the naked eye, are responsible. Mussels that have been exposed to such particles eat less, and thus grow less well, according to research carried out by scientists and students at Wageningen University and IMARES, both part of Wageningen UR. They wrote about their research in the most recent issue of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

The presence of 'plastic soup' in the oceans is regarded as a big problem. Tiny plastic particles enter the sea when plastic debris decomposes. Such particles are probably also released from cosmetics and from clothes in the wash, subsequently entering the sewage system and surface waters and eventually reaching the sea.

The EU and the Dutch government recognise the problem and the need to monitor the existence of plastics in the seas in order to learn more about present and future concentrations of plastic micro- and nanoparticles in marine environments. Very little is known about the effects plastic nanoparticles have on sea life. The effects now discovered do not yet prove that plastic in the North Sea is a big problem, but they do suggest that further research is extremely important, the researchers remark.

Professor Bart Koelmans' research team, from Wageningen University and IMARES, exposed mussels to various concentrations of nanoplastic in order to discover the concentration at which an effect was noticeable. The team also varied the quantity of algae -- the normal food source for mussels. By giving the plastic nanoparticles colour, and by measuring them using dynamic light scattering, it was possible to determine the particle concentration that exerted an effect. The researchers described in their publication that the extent to which the tiny plastic particles clump together is also extremely important for understanding particle uptake and the resulting effects in marine organisms. "It means that those effects are not easy to predict because the biological availability of the particles can differ enormously from one organism to another, and because variation in water quality also plays a role," says Prof. Koelmans.

Four research studies

This publication is the first of four by Wageningen University and IMARES into the effects of plastic in the North Sea. The other studies will be published in the near future. The first of these is research into the effect of plastic on lugworms, which lose weight due to uptake of plastic particles. The worms, as a result, take in more toxic substances such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which bind to plastics.

The researchers believe this indicates the need for good research into other toxic substances that bind to plastic -- an additional consequence of the presence of microplastics. In order to analyse the interaction of plastic and other toxic substances in the food web, Koelmans' group has made a detailed computer model. This type of model is crucial for estimating the risks plastics impose in the sea. The last piece of research is into plastic debris in the stomachs of fish. An analysis of hundreds of fish has shown that 12% of them have debris in their stomachs. Around half of that debris is plastic.

Of PlayStation Vita owners, 'almost all' own PlayStation 3 as well

Sony isn't sharing exact numbers, but Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles John Koller teased that "almost all" PlayStation Vita owners are also PlayStation 3 owners. We were discussing the potential crossover between Vita and PS3 -- the obvious comparison to Nintendo's latest offering, the Wii U, and its tablet controller. The Vita and the PS3 are capable of producing similar functionality, and, if anything, with higher fidelity, as the Vita is a standalone console.

Koller says Sony invites the comparison. "We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily," he says. It's not just about the functionality, however, it's about whether implementing that functionality makes any sense. "It's dependent on the content. So we need to make sure the content isn't force fed. And, to us, making sure that the gamer receives the right type of experience is what's most important. So we're gonna pick our spots, but that technology does certainly exist here."

It wouldn't be hard to imagine Sony bundling the Vita and its new PS3 model together for holiday sales, pushing up against this holiday's Wii U launch. Koller says not just yet, though.
